This was on loan from my Mom, who liked it but thought that there were a few loose ends. We agree that the last name of the old guy in the hospital room (Dobbs) is an odd coincidence to be left unexplained — hmmm. I enjoyed this book a lot, particularly for the webbed interconnections between the characters (kind of a "two degrees of separation" thing). Smiley's prose is excellent, and the bloated, overfed hog as metaphor for the university is hilarious.
